Students' visualisation of structure and function in relation to the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule
We will explore how the structure-function relationship, which is central to biology, can be made salient in the teaching
of biology, specifically in the context of elementary aspects of structure and function of DNA. We will use tasks and
tools deriving from 'analogies' and 'transformations' (both of which we relate to mental visualisation), in a microgenetic
study of learning with students of Grade 12, to document and assess the process of change in students' understanding of
the structure and function of DNA.
