Learning Algebra

Outline of the course:

The aim of this reading course is to review ongoing research on how children learn algebra in school. Articles reporting recent and on-going research in algebra learning will form the reading for this course. There will be meetings twice a week for about 9 weeks. At each meeting, typically, a summary of a selected article will be presented by a participant followed by discussion. Evaluation will be based on the presentations and occasional written reviews. Participants will need to have some familiarity with school algebra. There is no pre-requisite beyond this and an interest in cognitive issues of learning.
