- 1960 - two psychologists at Harvard University Jerome Bruner and
George Miller founded the Center For Cognitive Studies. The Center
was explicitly devoted to furthering the new ways of thinking about
thinking, and played a central role in the early years of cognitive
science.
- Also in 1960 Miller, Galanter and Pribram proposed a distinctly
cognitive model of the mind. Mental activity took the form of
recursively embedded TOTE units (Test-Operate-Test-Exit) which used
feedback loops of cybernetics. Later led to Newell and Simon's
production system architecture.
- 1967 - the first influential general textbook devoted to the
exposition (and criticism) of the ``new science'' was released: Ulric
Neisser's Cognitive Psychology. It gave the name to this field.
- mid 1970s - Sloan Foundation gave major funding to Cognitive
Science initiatives.
- 1977 - First issue of the journal Cognitive Science.
Some recent themes in psychological thought: have implications
for research as well as pedagogy.
